Located in the scenic Sakunami Onsen of Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, this place not only boasts exceptional hot springs but also stands as the birthplace of the Sakunami-style traditional kokeshi dolls!
Ganguan(玩愚庵), nestled in Sakunami Onsen, is where the renowned Akira Suzuki crafts unbelievably cute kokeshi dolls, adding his own creative flair while honoring the tradition of Sakunami-style kokeshi.
As you enter, you’ll be greeted by the warm glow of large kokeshi lanterns, beautifully illustrated by Takashi Suzuki, his son and fellow kokeshi artisan.
Akira Suzuki, with a demeanor resembling a wrestler, creates these adorable kokeshi despite his sturdy appearance, making it heartwarming.

I once bought kokeshi directly from Suzuki Akira at an event.
As I filled my basket with numerous dolls, he kindly reminded me, ‘You can purchase up to three per person.’ I hadn’t noticed the small sign due to my excitement – it was a bit nerve-wracking! Quite an amusing moment!
Let’s explore the shop together.
It’s unbelievable – an abundance of cute kokeshi dolls!
Popular items have a one-per-person purchase limit, ensuring these cuties spread to everyone visiting the store.
The displays are delightful and charming, showcasing Suzuki’s ingenuity in utilizing the small size of their kokeshi dolls.
Inside, glass cases proudly exhibit the kokeshi crafted by the Suzuki family over the years.
Although not for sale, securing permission to photograph these treasures is worthwhile.
This piece in the shop is said to be the final work of Suzuki Shouji, Akira’s father.
Kokeshi crafted by Akira’s son, Takashi, are also available for purchase.
A visit to this shop vividly illustrates the passing down of the kokeshi legacy from generation to generation, making it a delightful experience for collectors of traditional kokeshi.
After purchasing your kokeshi, indulge in the nearby hot springs.
Enjoy your time at Sakunami Onsen!
