Kakizawa Yoshinobu is undoubtedly one of the hottest kokeshi artisans today, with fans not only in Japan but around the world.
While we've previously explored the charm of his kokeshi in past articles, this time, we introduce a shop where you can reliably acquire his creations.
Previous article: Naruko's cute face
Located in Naruko Onsen, Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, Kakizawa Kokeshi Shop is a small store where Mariko, Yoshinobu's mother and a kokeshi artisan, manages the storefront.
While Google Maps indicates the shop is open from 10 AM to 5 PM with no regular holidays, this information can be unreliable. It's advisable to call in advance, especially during the kokeshi festival when the shop might open earlier.
If you don't speak Japanese, hotel staff can assist with the call.
The shop is a bit off the central area of Naruko Onsen, approximately a 20-minute walk, so consider using a taxi or car.
Parking might be tricky; follow Mariko's instructions, and beware of a hidden drainage ditch in the grassy area.
Inside, it's like a dream with a multitude of Yoshinobu and Mariko's kokeshi, a rarity even within Japan!
As these kokeshi are handmade, they aren't mass-produced. Popular artisans' creations tend to sell out quickly, but this shop seems different – Yoshinobu's incredible craftsmanship ensures a consistent supply.
Note: The photos posted were taken during the Kokeshi Festival, so I think there were probably more items than usual. We also received comments from customers who visited the store outside of the period, saying that there were not many products available.
If you get the chance to visit this shop, you're bound to encounter some delightful kokeshi dolls!
The featured photos were taken in 2023 and 2022. Please note that these items are currently sold out and not available in-store. Your understanding in this matter is greatly appreciated.
